Romance & Refinement: Valentine’s Day at The Goetchius House

There’s something magical about celebrating special occasions in historic spaces, and our Valentine’s Day dinner at The Goetchius House proved to be nothing short of extraordinary.

Located in Columbus’s Historic District at 405 Broadway, this isn’t just another restaurant in a historic home – it’s a vision brought to life by owner Renate Martoni, who created more than just a dining establishment; she created what she calls a “healing house,” a space where community, comfort, and connection flourish.

Setting the Scene

The evening began with warm, fresh artisan bread served with a flavorful dipping oil – a simple yet perfect way to start our culinary journey. This was followed by an expertly crafted charcuterie board, featuring a thoughtful selection of cured meats, various cheeses, fresh fruits, vegetables, and accompaniments.

Fresh & Flavorful Beginnings

The Pear Salad exemplified the kitchen’s attention to detail and balance. Delicate slices of pear mingled with bright pomegranate seeds, candied pecans, and crumbled cheese, all brought together by a vibrant citrus dressing. Each bite offered a wonderful complexity of flavors and textures.

Masterful Main Courses

The entrées showcased the kitchen’s expertise. A perfectly prepared salmon arrived with a golden pistachio crust, accompanied by roasted potatoes. The nutty crust added both texture and rich flavor to the perfectly cooked fish.

But the true star of the evening was the Beef Wellington – quite possibly one of the finest dishes I’ve ever encountered. A 6 oz. steak was enveloped in a savory mixture of finely chopped mushrooms, onions, shallots, herbs, and garlic, all wrapped in golden, buttery puff pastry.

Each bite was a testament to the chef’s skill and attention to detail.

Sweet Endings

Dessert at The Goetchius House isn’t just an afterthought – it’s a celebration. We indulged in their entire dessert menu, starting with their interpretation of Tiramisu, elegantly topped with a cocoa powder chocolate heart.

The chocolate mousse that followed was pure decadence – creamy, smooth, and perfectly balanced with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and a tart raspberry garnish. The finale was their Apple cake, topped with a caramelized glaze and served with vanilla ice cream.

The warm spices of the cake paired beautifully with the cool, creamy ice cream, creating a harmonious end to our meal.
