In the Columbus dining scene, finding a venue that balances technical precision with genuine hospitality is rare. Morten’s at Old Town manages to achieve exactly that.
Named after Chef Morten Wulff, who was trained in Copenhagen, Denmark, the restaurant brings a level of European culinary discipline to Old Town. However, the atmosphere avoids being stuffy. Instead, they have cultivated a culture that feels sophisticated yet accessible—a relaxed environment where the focus remains squarely on the execution of the food.
The Cocktail Program
The experience begins with a beverage program that matches the kitchen’s ambition. I ordered the Freddie Mercury, a complex and botanical creation. It balances the depth of 7-year Angostura and white rum with the floral notes of lavender and blueberry liqueur. It is a layered, thoughtful cocktail that sets the tone for the meal.
The Bread Service Even the bread service is intentional. The basket arrives filled with black peppercorn and sourdough options, accompanied by a dipping oil infused with fresh rosemary, parsley, and thyme. It is a small detail, but one that signals the kitchen’s attention to aromatics.
The Appetizer: Shawarma Flatbread
We began with the Shawarma Flat Bread Pizza. This dish is a study in savory balance. It features marinated beef and lamb paired with smoked Gouda. The richness of the meat is cut by the acidity of a sundried tomato aioli and the tang of a buttermilk dressing. It is a well-composed starter that wakes up the palate without overwhelming it.
The Entrées
The Rib Eye The Grilled Rib Eye Steak is a massive cut, cooked to a precise medium-rare. The sear provides a necessary textural contrast to the tender interior. It is finished with a peppercorn demi-glace that adds a rich, savory depth, served alongside bouillon potatoes that absorb the sauce perfectly.
The Almond Crusted Salmon However, the standout of the evening was the Almond Crusted Salmon. This dish is a masterclass in texture. The almond crust provides a distinct crunch that contrasts with the delicate, flaky fish. It is paired with pepper linguine and tied together with an Orange Grand Marnier sauce. The citrus reduction lifts the entire dish, providing a brightness that balances the richness of the salmon.
The Finale
The meal concluded with a Spiced Carrot Cake. Topped with a house-made cream cheese icing, the cake itself was moist and dense, with the spices providing a warm finish to the dining experience.
Josh’s Take
