If there is one thing I love, it is a good mashup. So what if I told you there is a place in Columbus where you can indulge in two of the best sweet treats, ice cream and donuts at the exact same time?
Let me introduce you to Milkshake Momma (also known as Southern Roots Country Store). They have taken these two beloved desserts, smashed them together, and created a treat that honestly deserves its own food group.
The Confusion: Milkshake Momma or Southern Roots?
Let’s clear up the name first because it confuses people.
Back in 2019, a spot called Southern Roots Country Store & Cafe opened in Crawford, Alabama. It was a cozy place full of Southern charm, comfort food, and one thing that stood out above all: their wild, colorful milkshakes.
They got so popular that the founder, Sylvia Nolan, earned the nickname “Milkshake Momma.” Eventually, that name stuck. Now at their Uptown Columbus location, some people still call it Southern Roots, but most just call it what it is: Milkshake Momma.
Whether you use one name or the other, it is the same place and either way, you are in for something sweet.
The Main Event: Mini Donuts + Ice Cream
I stopped by specifically to try the newest addition to their lineup: mini donuts topped with ice cream and loaded with toppings.
I asked the owner what to try, and before I knew it, I had a metal tray in front of me called the “Dirty 1/2 Dozen.” It had warm mini donuts as the base, topped with scoops of ice cream, fruity pebbles, rainbow sprinkles, chocolate drizzle, and whipped cream.
If that sounds like too much sugar, don’t worry because you can customize it however you want. But I say go big or go home.
The Spoon Battle
Let me set the scene: I dug my spoon in, and it cut through the warm donuts and cold ice cream like a dessert avalanche. It was sweet, soft, crunchy, creamy, and everything in between.
And just as I was getting into it, I realized my wife’s spoon was making a move too.
What followed was a full-on dessert battle, spoon versus spoon, racing for the last bite. I will admit it, I lost. But the real win? This dessert is legit.
It is simple, over-the-top, and a little messy. But sometimes that is exactly what you want. And according to my wife who is one of the toughest food critics I know, this was one of the best desserts she has had in Columbus.
Josh’s Take
I don’t say this lightly: if I had a “Top 10 Local Treats” list, this would be on it. This dessert is fun, flavorful, shareable, and dangerously addictive in the best way.
So if you are downtown and craving something sweet, head to Milkshake Momma. Just make sure you bring a couple of napkins it is the kind of dessert you wear proudly.
